HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968-04-02 - Regular City CouncilStephenville, Texas April 2, 1968 The City Council met in a regular meeting on the above date with Mayor Arthur presiding and the following council members present: Robert Herring, Mrs. Doyle White, Garland Loudermilk, Charles Riggins, W. M. Irwin, Telefus Cawyer, Raymond Anderson and Mrs. Fred McCleskey. Others present were: Director of Public Works Gann, Fire I-iarshall Fergerson, Chief Cornell, and City Attorney Chandler. Minutes of previous meetings were read and approved. Councilman Anderson reported that the Committee has not been able to meet with Mr. Weese in regard to use of part of the airport land for the Motorcycle Club. Councilman Anderson also reported that the Committee has checked into the bill from Briggs Weaver for pump parts. It has also checked with the engineer, and will meet with Briggs Weaver officials before a recommendation will be made. Councilman Cawyer reported that the sewage disposal problem at the Melton residence on Riverside Drive is being checked into. It was reported that the septec tank on this property is large and may just need cleaning out to make it work properly. City Secretary also reported that the problem has been checked into by himself and other city employees. Councilman Irwin reported that street patching is being done as the weather permits, and a lot of drainage ditches are being opened. Councilman Loud -.rmilk reported that contractors have checked the City airstrip and recommended the runway be put back ten feet on eacYn side, rebased, paved, and the other part of the runway be repaved. There has only been one bid received at this time. it was moved by Councilman Irwin and seconded by Councilman Cawyer to advertise for bids to remove the buildings from the Higginbotham Lumber Yard Oroperty. The motion carried unanimously. Councilwoman McCleskey reported a large attendance at all activities of the recreation program. There is a need to do some work on the Park roads, the low water bridge, and to construct a walking trail in the parks area. It was reported that the Museum property is in great need of mowing. Director of Public Works stated that this will be done as soon as the area becomes dry enough. Councilman Riggins reported that the Committee has no;: recommendations on the proposed fire station at this time. Mayor reported that the former post office building and land will be deeded to the City for the purpose of a City Library. The Post Office Department is only waiting for the plans for remodeling the building. Some local contractors have been contacted and it will cost approximately 11"20,000 to remodel. It was pointed out that all the work of remodeling need not be done'at this time- but the Post Office Department needs to know how much will be done each year. It was agreed that it would be munch better if the complete remodeling can be done at one time, and the Mayor asked Councilman Loudermilk, Riggins and Irwin to work with Director of Finance, to work out the financing of remodeling and to notify the Post Office Department of the plans. Mayor and Council Members expressed appreciation to Mrs. White for her cooperation while serving as a Council. Member. The Mayor appointed Councilman Loudermil, Cawyer and Irwin as a commitee to canvass the results of the City Election. This Commitee reported the election returns in order.The Candidates received the following votes: Mayor: Jack Arthur - - - -- 885 John Skipper - - - -- 822 Councilman Place 2 Mrs. K. D. Dorris - - - -- 522 Mrs. J. D. McCullough - 377 Don Metsgar ----- - - - - -- 803 p1 Councilman Place 4 Charles Riggins Councilman Place 6 Raymond Anderson - - - - -- Councilman Place 8 Mrs. Fred McCleskey - - -- 1682 1681 1096 Jack Curtis ---- - - - - -- 607 It was moved by Councilman Riggins and seconded by Councilwoman White that the report` of ,tbhe Commitee be accepted and the payroll for holding the election be approved. The motion carried unanimously. The Candidates receiving the highest number of votes being: Mayor, Jack Arthur; Councilman Place 2, Don Metsgar; Councilman Place L;, Charles Riggins; Councilman Place 6, Raymond Anderson; and Councilman Place 8, Mrs. Fred McCleskey. These candidates wFare declared elected and a motion put to a vote carried unanimously.
