HomeMy WebLinkAbout1970-08-18 - Special City CouncilAugust 18, 1970 Stephenville, Texas The city Council met on the above date in a called meeting with the following members present: Jack Curtis, Toby Stone, W. M. Irwin, Garland Loudermilk, Doug Smithey, Don Metsgar, and Mayor John Skipper presiding. Mr. Byron Singleton appeared before the council acting as a representative for the Industrial Foundation and presented a proposal for a new industry. The industry would manufacture small fiberglas plastic items and would employ some 30 to 40 people after a 3 year period. The site for the factory would be adjacent to property now occupied by Genault Industies. It was requested of the city to furnish water and sewer lines to the site. Mayor Skipper stated that such a project would cost the city about $10,000. The council felt that city could furnish some labor assistance but it would be too much expense to run water and sewer lines to the industry. After later discussion. Councilmen Stone, . Irwin, and Curtis were appointed as a committee to study the matter and to encourage the induatry to locate here in the city but to seek other means fm of financing the water and sewer line project. Mr. C. J. Collier, Jr., a tax representative of Lone Star Gas Co. appeared before the council to discuss the tax evaluation of Lone Star Gas Co. for 1970. Mr. Collier felt that the tax assessement should be lowered from the proposed figure by the Equalization Board. Mr. Collier asked the council that the assessment be lowered to the figure set out by the Lone Star Gas Co.. Mr. E. A. Blanchard, chairman of the Board of Equalization later gave a detailed report of the findings of the Board concerning this matter. _—­After discussion, Coucilman Curtis made a motion seconded by Councilman Metsgar to sustain the Board of Equalization's in their findings in the total assessed valuation for the year 1970 to be $245,438.00 for Lone Star Gas Co. Motion carried unanimously. Mr. T. C. Poston appeared before the council requesting that an adjustment be made on 1969 city tax of personal property in the amount of $1500 assessed valuation. Mr. Poston claimed that this was already rendered along with other personal pro- perty. Mr. Poston also requested an adjustment of 1969 city tax on the former Kimbell property claiming that the assessed valuation of $6000`;was too high. He asked that the valuation be adjusted to $4000. Councilman Loudermilk made a.motion 3 seconded by Councilman Smithey that the valuation of the Kimbell property remain at $6000 for 1969. Motion carried. The council felt that the $1500 assessed personal property of Mr. Poston was a double rendition and agreed that this be adjusted. Mayor Skipper appointed a committee of Councilmen Loudermilk, Smithey, and Metsgar to investigate the annual Christmas lighting project.
