A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING
STEPHENVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT
THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
Whereas, on July 1, 1898, the Stephenville Fire Department was organized by the
following members: J. A. Jordon, D. H. Perry, W. J. Murphy, B. F. Compton, Ben Bassel,
W. H. Crouse, L. T. Woodall, R. H. Wyly, Jonathon Cameron, J. J. Anderson, Oscar Cain,
Frank Wyly, C. T. Love, Mort McIlhaney, Joe Murphy, J. E. Shelton, W. A. Hyatt, W. L.
Griffith, Ab Shelton, and Walter Kiker; and
Whereas, on July 5, 1898, the bylaws and constitution of the Stephenville Fire
Department were approved by Mayor R. T. Hume and the City Council; and said Council
appointed J. A. Jordon as Fire Chief; and
Whereas, the first fire station and bell tower were completed on February 14, 1899,
thereafter the department was housed in the new city hall and fire station on the northeast
corner of Belknap and Green Streets, built in 1909. The department opened a new station in
1954 at 212 West Tarleton Street, and added Fire Station No. 2 on Harbin Drive in 1976; and
Whereas, in 1976, the Fire Department assumed the operation of the emergency medical
services for Erath County, which today comprises 80°% of the department's activity; and
Whereas, through the last 100 years, the Stephenville Fire Department has utilized
equipment progressing from hand -drawn hose carts in 1898, two gray horses and a red fire
/r\ wagon in 1909, and a one -ton Ford fire truck in 1916 to the modern day pumpers, aerial ladder
r 1p truck, and ambulances.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Stephenville,
r j that the 100th Anniversary of the Stephenville Fire Department be officially recognized and that
t the duty and service of all members of the Stephenville Fire Department, past and present, be
acknowledged. Be it further resolved that the week of July 12-18, 1998 be declared as
Stephenville Fire Department Appreciation Week.

July 7,1998.
