HomeMy WebLinkAbout1957-09-17 Regular Meeting1-47 r`er 17, T'ae City Council met in called session on the above date with Mayor Evans presiding and the fcllowin aldermen present: David Hugon, Virgil Dickerson, Chas. Riggirs, Philip Price, J. P. Hedrick, Albert Graves and. Scott D. Reed. Others present were City Atty. Chandler, Chief Cornell and St. Supt. iic�i`ahan. Alderman Reed discussed the hiring of R. Y. Gann as Assistant 'later & Sewer Superintendent. After some discussion, it was moved by Alderman Dickerson, seconded by Alderman Hugon, that City hire R. Y. Gann as Assistant Water 3s Sewer Superintendent at a salary of F280.00 per month, effective October 1, 1957. I-.otion carried. Alderman 'Iedrick reported the Boy Scouts wanted the City to pur- chase enough light fixtures to take care of their new ball grounds on E. Long St. and Lennox Ave. This matter was discussed but no action taken. Alderman Hedrick also reported the need for an extra man during the Fall Fair. After some discussion, it was suggested this matter be referred to t-:e Park Committee and be worked out by them. Alderman Hedrick reported the need of new electric switch boxes in the park area, that it would cost approximately $61.00. It was suggested and agreed for Park Committee to go ahead on this matter. Also, that M'r. Flory, College Golf Instructor, wanted to be allowed to play free on City's Golf Course while serving as instruc- tor to the college students golf team. After some discussion, it was agreed to allow Coach Flory to play golf free while serving as in- structor to the college tear:. Favor Evans discussed the present static and conditions surround- ing the proposed play grounds for colored people on E. Tarleton St. n'fter more discussion, it was moved by Alderman Reed, seconded by Alderman Dickerson, that the Eayor be authorized to make Arizona Johnson an offer of $1169.09 for Lot 1, Block 56, City addition, after Garner Park Trustees have promised to pay the above price for said lot, Motion carried. Discussed at this time was the fence line between City Golf Course and lvllr. Grady Stone, and it was suggested and agreed that Park Committee be authorized to make an agreement with A:r. Stone as to where the fence should be set, also to have the understnading with I=ir. Stone that gol- fers be allowed to recover their balls should they fall on I:r. Scone's property. It was Also agreed that when Park Committee has reached an agreement with TKr. Stone that City Attorney Chandler shall be author- ized to draw up necessary papers for said agreement. Alderman Dickerson reported that the Fair Association was willing to pay City firemen, wtiiile on duty at the Fair Grounds, .,1.00 per hour for serving as extra nightwatchmen, if there was no objections by the Council. After some discussion, no objections were voiced by the Coun- cil and it was suggested and agreed that Fire Committee work out the necessary details to handle the matter. It was moved by Alderman Reed, seconded by Alderman Dickerson, that the ordinance increasing rates of Gulf States Telephone Company in the City of Stephenville be passed (said ordinance being attached to and becoming a part of these minutes). Eotion carried. Read and discussed at this time was a letter from the West End Cemetery Association expressing their desire to trun over the com- plete operation and ownership of that cemetery to the City. After further discussion, the matter was referred to the Cemetery Committee and they in turn will study and make recommendations then report back to Council at a later meeting. At this time a request, by petition, was presented to open up 6th Street where it crosses the Santa Fe Railroad. City Attorney 1.48 Chandler ask the Council if it was their desire for him to write the railroad company and request a crossing be made for this street. After discussion, it was agreed not to write a letter concerning this matter but that Alderman Graves be requested to look into the possibilities of not opening said street and still be able to get these folks mail service. It was moved by Alderman Dickerson, seconded by Alderman Groves, that City authorize City Attorney Chandler to file del- inquent tax suit against E'- of Lots 1-2-3-4, Block 9, Frey First Addition to the City of Stephenville. ,Motion carried. It was moved by Alderman Dickerson, seconded by Alderman Hugon, that the 1957 City Tax Roll be accepted and approved. I:otion carried.
