Mayor Weldon first reminded the audience that today is D-Day and is a time to remember and

troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily -fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany
on the beaches of Normandy, France. More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the
D-Day invasion, which resulted in the Allies gaining a foot -hold in Continental Europe. More than
9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded that day. Weldon said the sacrifices made by the
great men who served and gave their lives that day should be reassurance to us in these times
that we live in the greatest country in the world, founded on the principles that are God given.
