HomeMy WebLinkAbout1967-10-27 - Special City CouncilStephenville, Texas October 27, 1967 The -City Council met in a called meeting on the above"date with Mayor Arthur presiding and the following Council members present: Mrs. Doyle White, Garland Loudermilk, Charles Riggins, W. M. Irwin, Raymond Anderson, and Mrs. Fred McCleskey. Mayor stated that the purpose of this meeting is to discuss the calling of an election on the l% city sales tax. There are several cities in this area calling elections on December 5 on the sales tax proposition. The Council members discussed the 1% sales tax with the result that all members favor this tax; but some think that the election shoyrd not be called at this time. It was moved by Councilman Riggins and seconded by Councilwoman McCleskey to adopt an ordinance ordering a special election to be bold in the City of Stephenville, Texas on the question of the adoption of a -1% local sales and use tax within the City: designating the day of the election and polling place; appointing election officials therefor; providing: that all duly qualified resident electors shall be qualified to vote; prescribing form of ballot;providing for notice of election; containing other provisions relating to said election; providing for severability; and declaring emergency. A vote was called for with the result of three for and three against adoption of above ordinance. The Mayor voted for adoption of the ordinance. The motion carried by a vote of four for and three against. Councilman Irwin asked to go on record as being in favor of the 1% sales tax, but against calling the election at this time. The Council discussed the use of tokens that were purchased by the downtown merchants association for use in the parking meters. These tokens were delivered to the local bank. There being no other business at this time, the Council stood adjourned subject to the Mayor's, call. AT (� --C�Ity Secretary
